Four wheeled drive or tractor driven seeders carry a slurry tank in which the materials are held suspended in water. This slurry is fed to spray jets via special pumps designed to avoid damage to the seeds. Application to the required areas can be either direct from the seeders or via extension hoses and pumped approximately 150m into a manual spray nozzle.

In addition, slow release fertilisers are used as ameliorants. These are usually preferred on difficult terrain, due to the longer germination period, compared with conventional fertiliser, over which nutrients are released. They also reduce loss by leaching and are particularly suitable in nitrate pollution sensitive areas.

The Hydraseeders range includes:

Polymers - these synthesised products have high water absorption and slow moisture release properties.

Alginates - natural products containing nutrients extracted from seaweed whose main characteristics are good water absorption and soil structure improvement.

Hydrafeeding

When necessary we recommend additional hydrafeeding - the application of base fertilisers with trace elements that are especially effective in correcting deficiencies and boosting available plant foods to accelerate balanced growth.

Training

All Hydraseeders field personnel are trained to ensure their safety and to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act. Similarly all clothing and P.P.E, as well as working methods, machinery and all the equipment utilised in hydraseeding are designed to meet Health and Safety requirements.

Aftercare and Guarantee

All the works undertaken by Hydraseeders Limited carry a 12 month guarantee so assuring that if a full vegetative cover is not produced the company will return to ascertain the reason for the problem and suggest the best course of action to rectify this.

Hydraseeders recommend that an area be mown at least once during the first year after seeding in order to tiller the grasses.

Mulches, Binders and Stabilisers

Apart from the seed variety itself the most important constituents of the Hydraseeders formula are the mulches, binders and stabilisers.
Mulching enhances the establishment of the seedlings by reducing the water evaporation, so aiding the soil’s moisture retention. Mulching also inhibits erosion caused by impact and run off and creates a microclimate to aid germination. Among the materials normally used with hydraseeding are cellulose wood fibre, peat and straw. In order to be effective mulches must be applied at a rate sufficient to give a good cover to ground and seeds.

Binders and stabilisers are chemical products which act as ‘adhesives’. With the binders it is the mulch and seeds that are ‘stuck’ to the surface of the soil. Stabilisers, on the other hand are designed to make the soil particles adhere together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hydroseeding is a planting method where grass seed, fertiliser, water and mulch are mixed into a slurry and sprayed evenly over prepared soil using specialist equipment. This method promotes fast, even germination and healthy grass establishment.

The hydroseeding mixture is blended in a tank and sprayed directly onto prepared ground. The mulch helps retain moisture, protect the seed and hold everything in place, reducing the risk of erosion while encouraging strong growth.

Hydroseeding offers several advantages:
  • Fast and even seed distribution
  • Improved moisture retention
  • Cost-effective alternative to turfing for large areas
  • Effective erosion control on slopes and banks
  • Suitable for commercial, industrial and domestic projects

Hydroseeding can be applied to most soil types and is particularly effective on slopes, embankments and difficult-to-access areas where traditional seeding or turf laying may be challenging.

Germination typically begins within 1–3 weeks, depending on weather conditions, soil quality and seed mix. Full establishment will vary depending on maintenance and seasonal conditions.

Yes. The mulch and binding agents within the hydroseeding mixture help stabilise the soil surface, making it ideal for erosion-prone areas.

For best results, the ground should be cleared of debris, levelled and, where necessary, lightly cultivated to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.

Newly hydroseeded areas should be kept consistently moist during germination. Foot traffic should be avoided until the grass is fully established.

Yes. Hydroseeding allows for customised seed blends to suit specific site conditions, whether for lawns, commercial landscapes or erosion control projects.
